India is witnessing a fresh surge in COVID-19 cases, with active infections reaching 5,755, as per the latest update from the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare. In the last 24 hours, the country reported 391 new cases and four deaths due to the virus.

The four deaths occurred in different states — Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Kerala, and Tamil Nadu. Among the deceased was a 45-year-old pregnant woman, while the remaining three were elderly individuals with underlying health conditions such as hypothyroidism and respiratory issues.

Surge Linked to New Variants

Health authorities have linked this recent spike to several new COVID-19 variants, including LF.7, XFG, JN.1, and a newly identified NB.1.8.1 subvariant. These variants are believed to be more contagious and may be responsible for the sharp rise in cases seen over the past few weeks.

The number of active cases has increased rapidly — from just 257 on May 22 to over 5,700 by June 7. The state of Kerala continues to report the highest number of active cases, followed by Delhi, West Bengal, and Maharashtra.

Government Issues Health Advisory

In light of the rising numbers, the central government has issued health advisories to all states and union territories. They have been instructed to ensure the availability of oxygen, life-saving medicines, and other essential healthcare resources.

Hospitals are being urged to remain alert and be prepared for any rise in hospitalizations. Although most current infections appear to be mild, the government is taking preventive steps to avoid any pressure on the healthcare system.

Identifying Symptoms and Staying Cautious

Health experts have reminded the public that COVID-19 symptoms can be similar to those of other viral fevers, such as fever, tiredness, sore throat, and body aches. It is important to get tested and not assume symptoms are harmless.

Those who are elderly, pregnant, or have pre-existing health conditions are at a higher risk and should be more careful. If symptoms last more than a couple of days or get worse, medical help should be sought immediately.

Safety Measures Recommended

Doctors and health organizations continue to recommend basic safety measures to reduce the risk of infection. These include:

Wearing a mask, especially in crowded or indoor areas.

Washing hands regularly with soap and water.

Using hand sanitizer when water is not available.

Avoiding close contact with people showing symptoms of illness.

Getting vaccinated or taking booster doses, if eligible.

Although the current number of infections is not as high as in previous waves, the upward trend is a reminder to stay alert and cautious. Individuals are encouraged to follow public health guidelines and monitor updates from health authorities.

By taking timely precautions and being responsible, the spread of the virus can be controlled effectively.
