New Delhi witnessed a stormy day in the Lok Sabha when Union Home Minister Amit Shah introduced the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill. The Bill aims to create a legal framework for removing the Prime Minister, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers, or State Ministers from their posts if they are arrested and kept in custody for serious crimes for 30 consecutive days.
As soon as Shah stood up to present the Bill, the House erupted in chaos. Opposition MPs, led by Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader Kalyan Banerjee, rushed to the center of the House. In an unprecedented act, they tore copies of the Bill and threw them toward Amit Shah. The shocking scenes forced the presiding officer to adjourn the House till 3 p.m.
Even amid the uproar, Shah managed to formally present the Bill, which has now been referred to a Select Committee for further discussion. However, the uproar did not calm down. When the House reassembled, opposition members continued their protests, leading to another adjournment till 5 p.m.
During the heated moments, Union Minister Anurag Thakur, Minister of State Ravneet Singh Bittu, and Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju quickly formed a protective circle around the Home Minister as TMC MPs moved aggressively toward him.
After adjournment, the Parliament floor and galleries were scattered with torn pieces of the Bill, showing the extent of the confrontation. BJP MPs demanded strong action, including suspension of the opposition MPs involved in the chaos.
The dramatic events reflect the deep tension between the government and opposition over accountability of ministers. While the Bill seeks to establish strict rules against leaders facing serious charges, the opposition claims it could be misused for political purposes. The debate is set to continue when Parliament reconvenes.
