Due to increasing tension between India and Pakistan, all schools in six border districts of Punjab have been ordered to remain shut for safety reasons. This decision was made by district authorities to protect students and staff in these sensitive areas.

The affected districts are Ferozepur, Pathankot, Fazilka, Amritsar, Gurdaspur, and Tarn Taran. These regions are close to the international border and are considered high-risk zones during any rise in cross-border tensions.

According to officials, the closure came into effect on Thursday morning, and strict orders have been given to ensure that no school in these areas remains open until further notice. The decision is seen as a precautionary measure, considering the ongoing unstable situation between the two neighbouring countries.

In Tarn Taran, the deputy commissioner issued an official order that all schools in the district will remain closed from May 8 to May 11. This includes both government and private schools. Authorities said the safety of children is their top priority, and they will review the situation before taking further decisions.

In Ferozepur, the administration has ordered a 72-hour closure of all schools, which will be reviewed after three days. If needed, the closure might be extended based on the ground situation. The authorities there are also closely monitoring developments along the border.

In Fazilka, officials have stated that schools will remain closed until further orders. No timeline has been shared yet, and the district administration is expected to issue updates as the situation evolves.

Parents in these districts have welcomed the move, although they are also worried about the ongoing tensions. “Safety of our children comes first. We hope the government takes all necessary steps to maintain peace,” said a resident of Gurdaspur.

Local administrations in all six districts are also in touch with security forces. Patrolling has been increased in border villages, and residents are being advised to stay alert. Emergency services are on standby in case of any untoward incident.

Though the exact reason for the sudden rise in tension has not been officially confirmed, sources say there has been increased movement along the border, which prompted this urgent step.

Educational institutions have been instructed to shift to online classes temporarily, if possible. However, in many rural areas, the lack of internet connectivity makes online learning difficult.

The situation is being monitored closely by the Punjab state government as well as central agencies. Further instructions will be issued as needed, depending on the evolving situation.

This is not the first time that schools in border areas of Punjab have been closed due to rising tensions. In the past too, such precautionary closures have been ordered to ensure the safety of students and teaching staff.

The people of Punjab, especially in the border districts, are hoping for peace and a quick return to normalcy.
