Australian cricket star Glenn Maxwell has announced his retirement from One Day Internationals (ODIs). While stepping away from the 50-over format, he confirmed that he will continue to play T20 cricket for Australia. Maxwell, known for his explosive batting and effective spin bowling, has been a key player for both the national team and various T20 franchises, including Punjab Kings in the Indian Premier League (IPL).
Though Maxwell didn’t perform well with the bat in this IPL season and was later ruled out due to injury, his contributions to the game remain unforgettable.
A Remarkable ODI Career Since 2012
Maxwell made his ODI debut in 2012. Over his career, he played 149 matches, scoring 3990 runs at a quick pace. He also took 77 wickets with his off-spin bowling, maintaining an economy rate of 5.46. He was part of Australia’s World Cup-winning teams in both 2015 and 2023. His record includes 4 centuries and 23 half-centuries in ODIs.
Unforgettable 201 Against Afghanistan*
One of Maxwell’s most iconic performances came in the 2023 World Cup against Afghanistan, where he played a historic unbeaten innings of 201 runs. This knock is considered one of the best in his career and one of the greatest in World Cup history. Despite physical cramps, he led his team to a stunning victory.
A True All-Rounder
Maxwell was not only a powerful batter and handy bowler but also an excellent fielder. He took 91 catches in ODIs, often changing the course of a match with his brilliance in the field. Even though he will no longer play ODIs, fans will still get to enjoy his talent in the T20 format.
