In a landmark achievement for Indian badminton, the women’s team secured a historic victory in the Badminton Asia Team Championship by defeating Thailand 3-2 in a thrilling final held in Selangor, Malaysia. The triumph marks India’s first-ever win in the prestigious continental team championship.
P.V. Sindhu, making a strong comeback from injury, set the tone by securing a dominant 21-12, 21-12 win against Supaninda Katethong, providing India with an early 1-0 lead. The dynamic duo of Gayatri Gopichand and Trisa Jolly showcased resilience in a challenging three-game encounter, clinching a crucial victory in the doubles match and extending India’s lead to 2-0.
Despite setbacks in the subsequent matches, including a defeat for Ashmita Chaliha and in the second doubles, 16-year-old Anmol Badal emerged as the hero of the day. Ranked 472nd globally, Badal displayed exceptional skill and determination, defeating world number 45 Pornpicha Chokiwong in straight games to secure the decisive victory for India.
