The Karnataka Legislative Assembly on Wednesday passed a bill to rename Bengaluru City University as Dr. Manmohan Singh Bengaluru City University. The amendment to the Karnataka State Universities Act, 2000 was introduced to honor the legacy of the former Prime Minister, who was also a renowned economist, educationist, administrator, and statesman.
Honoring a National Leader
Dr. Manmohan Singh is remembered for leading India’s landmark economic reforms and serving as the country’s Prime Minister for two consecutive terms. The state cabinet had already approved the proposal in July, and the announcement was first made during the Karnataka Budget speech on 7 March. With this decision, the university becomes the first in India to be named after Dr. Singh.
Contributions to Bengaluru
During his tenure as Prime Minister, Dr. Singh played a key role in shaping Bengaluru’s modern infrastructure. In 2008, he inaugurated the city’s new international airport, now known as Kempegowda International Airport, which has since become a major hub for South India. Three years later, he flagged off the first phase of the Namma Metro, launching services between Baiyappanahalli and MG Road. This marked the beginning of a mass transit system that has transformed daily commuting in the city.
The move is seen as a tribute to Dr. Singh’s contributions both to the nation and specifically to Bengaluru’s growth.
