Bakhra Dam in Punjab’s Malwa region is creating concern as water levels have risen close to the danger mark. On Monday, the water level reached 1600 Plus feet, just 6 feet below the critical limit. To manage this, authorities from BBMB opened the dam’s flood gate by 4 feet, releasing 56,000 cusecs of water into the Sutlej River.

Normally, only 36,000 cusecs of water flow from Bakhra Dam into the river. This sudden increase of 20,000 cusecs has raised the risk of flooding in several districts, including Ropar, Nawanshahr, Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur, Mansa, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sri Anandpur Sahib, and Ludhiana. Hundreds of villages along the Sutlej, Ghaggar, Tangri, Markanda, and Bakhra’s canals are on high alert.

Residents in these areas have started securing their homes and valuables. Authorities have advised people to stay alert and follow safety instructions. The situation is being closely monitored to prevent any major damage. Farmers and villagers are particularly concerned about their crops and homes.

Officials emphasize that managing dam water is crucial during heavy rains, and everyone living downstream should remain cautious. People are urged to move to safer locations if necessary and to keep an eye on official updates regarding water release from the dam.
