Following repeated assertions by U.S. President Donald Trump regarding his role in preventing a potential war between India and Pakistan, China has now entered the fray. Beijing recently claimed that it played a pivotal role in mediating between the two nuclear-armed neighbors following a spike in military hostilities earlier this year.

Speaking at a symposium on international relations and China’s foreign policy on Tuesday, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi stated that Beijing has acted as a “neutral mediator” in several global flashpoints. Wang highlighted that China intervened to de-escalate tensions not only between India and Pakistan but also in conflicts involving Northern Myanmar, the Iran nuclear deal, Palestine-Israel, and the Cambodia-Thailand border dispute.

The Conflict and India’s Stance
The recent cycle of violence was triggered by a major terror attack in Pahalgam on April 22. In a swift military response, India launched ‘Operation Sindhur’, targeting terrorist infrastructure across the border. While China claims its diplomatic efforts halted the escalation, New Delhi has consistently maintained a different narrative.
India has traditionally rejected any third-party mediation regarding its relations with Pakistan. Indian officials clarified that the cessation of military hostilities was the result of direct communication between the Directors General of Military Operations (DGMOs) of both countries on May 10, rather than external pressure or intervention.

Controversy Over “Disinformation”
Adding a layer of complexity to the diplomatic tug-of-war, several U.S. reports have surfaced accusing China of playing a double game. The reports allege that following Operation Sindhur, Beijing launched a sophisticated social media disinformation campaign aimed at tarnishing the reputation of India’s Rafale fighter jets and spreading misleading narratives to favor its strategic interests in the region.
As both Washington and Beijing vie for the title of “peacemaker,” the ground reality remains focused on the fragile direct channels between New Delhi and Islamabad.
