A right-wing opposition senator and declared candidate for Colombia’s upcoming 2026 presidential election was critically wounded after being shot during a campaign event in the capital city of Bogota. The shocking incident took place as the politician was addressing a public gathering.
Video footage shared widely on social media captured the moment when the senator was delivering a speech before sudden gunshots rang out, creating chaos among attendees. In a separate clip, he appeared slumped against the hood of a white car, visibly bleeding, while several individuals attempted to assist him.
Authorities confirmed that the senator was moved to a nearby hospital and is currently in intensive care. Reports indicate that he may have been shot in the neck or head. Security and medical teams responded quickly to the scene, providing urgent medical attention and securing the area.
Initial investigations suggest that the shooter approached the senator from behind before firing. A suspect, reportedly a 15-year-old boy, was taken into custody shortly after the attack. Officials stated that while early reports point to a minor as the shooter, this detail is still under investigation and not yet officially confirmed.
Government officials condemned the attack in strong terms, calling it not only an assault on an individual but also on the democratic values of the nation. The act has sparked widespread concern across the political spectrum, with calls for unity in preserving democratic integrity and ensuring the safety of political figures.
The senator’s political party released a statement expressing deep concern and emphasizing that the attack jeopardizes not just a single life, but also threatens the broader ideals of democracy and free political participation in the country. The party described the shooting as a targeted and deliberate act of political violence.
Security measures are being tightened in the capital and around other political events. Authorities announced a reward equivalent to approximately $700,000 for credible information that leads to those responsible for the attack. Investigations are ongoing to determine whether the shooter acted alone or as part of a larger conspiracy.
The targeted individual has a notable political background, being part of a prominent family long involved in Colombian politics. His career includes serving as a senator, as well as holding previous roles in city governance. Despite a loss in the 2019 mayoral race, he has remained a significant figure in national politics and had recently announced plans to run for the presidency in 2026.
This incident comes at a time of heightened political sensitivity in Colombia, as the country prepares for future elections. Violence against political figures remains a concerning issue, and this attack has renewed fears about security and political stability.
Public reaction has been one of shock and sadness, with many citizens expressing concern for the state of democracy and the safety of those who choose to serve in public office. As the investigation continues, leaders are urging the public to stay informed through official channels and to cooperate with authorities in ensuring that justice is served.
