The Delhi High Court today instructed the Central government to submit a status report outlining the steps taken to address the growing threat of deepfake technology. A bench comprising Chief Justice Manmohan and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela requested the government to provide details of any actions or initiatives implemented at the national level.
The court further asked if a high-powered committee has been formed to tackle the issue of deepfakes and instructed the Centre to provide information on its work and findings, if applicable. The court emphasized the importance of understanding the measures in place to combat this rising technological challenge.
The Central government has been given three weeks to file the status report, with the next hearing scheduled for November 21. This order follows concerns over the increasing use of deepfakes, which manipulate audio and video to create highly realistic but false representations of individuals, posing significant risks to privacy and security. The court aims to evaluate how the government is addressing these risks through its policies and enforcement actions.
