In response to the sharp rise in onion prices, the government has ramped up efforts by increasing the release of onions from its ‘buffer stock’ into wholesale markets. This move follows the recent removal of export duty, which caused retail prices to soar. Consumer Affairs Secretary Nidhi Khare announced that the Center has already started distributing onions from its buffer stock in Delhi and other major cities to stabilize prices.
To further control the situation, the government plans to retail onions at a subsidized rate of Rs 35 per kg across the country. This intervention is aimed at providing relief to consumers who are facing high onion prices, which in Delhi have surged to Rs 55 per kg as of September 22, compared to Rs 38 per kg at the same time last year, according to official data.
The government’s action is part of a broader strategy to curb inflation in essential commodities and ensure onions remain affordable for the public. By increasing both wholesale supply and retail sales at subsidized rates, the government hopes to bring down onion prices and prevent further price spikes in the coming weeks
