The government has decided to remove the 20% export tax on onions starting April 1. This step has been taken to protect the interests of farmers and ensure they get fair prices for their produce.
According to an official statement, the Department of Revenue issued a notification regarding this decision after receiving a letter from the Department of Consumer Affairs. The Ministry of Consumer Affairs stated that this move aims to help farmers get better prices while also maintaining affordable onion prices for consumers.
Farmers had been demanding the removal of the export tax, arguing that it was reducing their earnings. The government’s decision is expected to boost onion exports, benefiting farmers by increasing their income. At the same time, authorities will keep monitoring the domestic market to ensure that onion prices remain stable for consumers.
Experts believe that removing the tax will improve demand in international markets and strengthen India’s position as a key onion exporter. This step reflects the government’s commitment to balancing the needs of both farmers and consumers.
The onion export tax was initially imposed to control domestic prices, but with the situation stabilizing, the government has now decided to lift it.
