Continuous rainfall in different parts of Uttarkashi today has disrupted rescue operations in disaster-hit Dharali and Harsil areas. Officials said the flow of water in the Bhagirathi River has been blocked, forming a lake, and efforts are ongoing to release the water. Due to bad weather, helicopter services could not be started, and the search for people trapped under debris was also affected.
The Meteorological Department has predicted bad weather in the coming days and issued a heavy rain alert for August 13, 14, and 15 in the state. After the devastating flood in the Kheerganga River on August 5, chances of survival for those missing under debris in Dharali village are becoming slim as nearly a week has passed.
Garhwal Division Commissioner Vinay Shankar Pandey informed that 43 people are reported missing. The body of a young man, Akash Panwar, from Dharali village has been recovered. Of the 29 missing Nepali workers, contact has been made with five after mobile networks were restored. Immediate compensation of ₹5 lakh is being given to affected families.
Meanwhile, repair work has started on damaged roads, and the process of releasing water from the lake formed on the Bhagirathi River in Harsil is underway.
