Punjab has been experiencing continuous heavy rainfall over the past several days, leading to floods in many villages and low-lying areas. The rising water levels have created a serious threat near major dams, including Pong Dam, Ranjit Sagar Dam, and Bhakra Dam. Authorities from the Punjab Government and the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB) are on high alert as the situation worsens.

According to reports, the water level in Bhakra Dam crossed 1600 feet by yesterday evening. This forced officials to open the floodgates by 5 to 7 feet to release excess water. The BBMB stated that the maximum storage capacity of the dam is 1680 feet, which means the water level is just a few feet away from the danger mark.

With extra water released into the Sutlej River, hundreds of villages located along its banks have already been flooded. If inflow into the dam does not reduce within the next 24 hours, authorities may need to open more floodgates. Experts warn that releasing large volumes of water could cause massive destruction in many districts of Punjab’s Malwa region.
