Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is likely to represent India at Russia’s Victory Day parade next month. The parade, scheduled to take place on May 9 in Moscow, marks the 80th anniversary of the Soviet Union’s victory over Nazi Germany in World War II.

Russia had invited Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the grand celebrations. However, according to sources, it is unlikely that PM Modi will be attending the event. Earlier, Russia’s state-run news agency TASS had reported that Deputy Foreign Minister Andrey Rudenko confirmed an invitation was extended to Mr. Modi for the Victory Day celebrations.

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal also acknowledged the invitation. He said, “An invitation has been received for the Prime Minister to attend the Victory Day celebrations. We will announce our participation at an appropriate time.”

Russia has invited leaders from several friendly nations to join the Victory Day parade this year. If Rajnath Singh attends, he will represent India at a significant global event showcasing military strength and historical remembrance.

Prime Minister Modi has visited Russia twice in the past year — once for the annual summit with President Vladimir Putin and again for the BRICS summit in Kazan. On the other hand, Russian President Putin is expected to visit India later this year for the annual bilateral summit.

Victory Day is one of the most important events in Russia, marked by a large military parade on Red Square in Moscow. With growing global attention on Russia due to ongoing geopolitical tensions, India’s participation will be watched closely. Sending a senior minister like Rajnath Singh would reflect India’s balanced diplomatic approach and long-standing ties with Russia.
