The stage is set for the election of the second-highest constitutional post in the country—the Vice President of India. The Election Commission has announced the schedule for this important process.
According to the official timeline, the notification for the election will be released on 7th August. Candidates can file their nominations until 21st August. Scrutiny of nominations will take place on 22nd August. If necessary, voting will be held on 9th September, and the counting of votes will also take place on the same day. The last date to withdraw nominations is 25th August.
If more than one candidate is in the fray, members of the Parliament will cast their votes on 9th September. Political groups from the opposition side have decided to come together to support a common candidate, while the ruling party is yet to finalize its plans and discussions are expected to begin soon.
The previous Vice President resigned on 21st July due to health reasons, making the election essential. The newly elected Vice President will hold office for a full term of five years from the date they assume charge.
