Prime Minister Narendra Modi has announced a financial relief package of ₹1,600 crore for flood-affected areas of Punjab. He assured that families of those who lost their lives will receive ₹2 lakh each, while the injured will be given ₹50,000 as compensation.
Earlier today, PM Modi conducted an aerial survey of the affected regions before reaching Gurdaspur, where he personally interacted with flood victims. He also met NDRF teams working on rescue operations and later spoke with farmers. The farmers raised their concern, informing him that they have not yet received compensation for the damages caused in 2023.
Union Ministers Ravneet Bittu and Sunil Jakhar accompanied the Prime Minister during his visit. Officials briefed him about the on-ground situation and the extensive damage caused by the floods. PM Modi assured full support from the central government, stating that the nation stands firmly with Punjab in this difficult time.
The floods in Punjab are being described as the worst since 1988, caused by rising water levels in the Sutlej, Beas, and Ravi rivers, combined with heavy rainfall in Himachal Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir. Modi emphasized that the government will provide every possible help to bring relief and stability to the affected families.
