Indian External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has left for Moscow on a three-day visit aimed at strengthening the long-standing partnership between India and Russia. The Ministry of External Affairs described this partnership as one that has “stood the test of time” and continues to remain important in the current global scenario.

Jaishankar’s visit comes at a sensitive time, as India’s relations with the United States face strain. Recently, U.S. President Donald Trump decided to double tariffs on Indian goods to 50 percent, which includes a 25 percent penalty on crude oil imports from Russia. Against this backdrop, India’s engagement with Russia has gained more significance.

During his visit, Jaishankar will co-chair the 26th session of the India-Russia Intergovernmental Commission on Trade, Economic, Scientific, Technical, and Cultural Cooperation along with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov. Both leaders are also expected to discuss Trump’s new initiative for peace in Ukraine, along with broader regional and global issues.

The Indian foreign ministry highlighted that the visit aims to review the bilateral agenda and reinforce the special strategic partnership between the two nations, which has played a key role in shaping India’s foreign policy for decades.
