In a major decision, the Supreme Court of India has directed that the NEET-PG 2025 exam, scheduled for June 15, must be conducted in a single shift across the country. The ruling came on Friday from a bench led by Justice Vikram Nath, along with Justices Sanjay Kumar and N.V. Anjaria. The court stated that holding the exam in two shifts could lead to unfairness and a lack of transparency.
The court emphasized that question papers in different shifts can never be exactly equal in terms of difficulty, which can cause problems for candidates. “Normalization,” which is used to adjust scores between shifts, may work in some cases but should not become a regular practice for such important exams, the court said.
The Supreme Court gave these directions while hearing petitions that challenged the notification allowing NEET-PG 2025 to be held in two shifts. The court noted that there are 2,42,678 candidates appearing for the exam, and it is held across the entire country, not just in one city.
The judges strongly disagreed with the argument that the exam could not be held in one shift due to logistical issues. They said, “Given the technological advancements in our country, we do not accept that the exam authority is unable to find enough centers to conduct the exam in a single shift.”
The court also instructed the authorities to ensure full transparency in the exam process and to identify safe and secure exam centers. According to the court, holding the exam in a single shift ensures fairness and equal opportunity for all candidates, and avoids the confusion and bias that can arise from multiple shifts.
