Former U.S. President Donald Trump has claimed that the tax imposed on India for buying oil from Russia influenced Moscow’s decision to engage in talks with Washington. According to Trump, the move affected Russia as India was its second-largest oil customer, and losing such a major buyer pushed Moscow to reconsider its stance.

Speaking in an interview with Fox News on Thursday, Trump said, “I think everything has an impact.” He added that when his administration told India, “We are going to charge you because you are doing business with Russia and buying oil,” it forced New Delhi to reduce its purchases. Trump suggested this action directly impacted Russia’s economy and was one of the reasons behind its willingness to negotiate.

His remarks come just a day before his scheduled high-level meeting with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Anchorage, Alaska, on Friday. The meeting is expected to address several global issues, including energy trade and international relations. Trump’s comments highlight how U.S. sanctions and trade measures can play a role in shaping international diplomacy and economic ties.
