Reduced Inflow in Dams, But Rivers Swelling

In the last 24 hours, water inflow from the hilly areas into Punjab’s Pong and Bhakra dams has decreased. However, the rising water level in the Ghaggar River has increased concern among people in the Malwa region. Earlier, continuous rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir and Himachal Pradesh had led to heavy inflow into Punjab’s three main dams, which caused flooding in eight districts of the state.

With the rising water in the Ghaggar and Tangri rivers, local administrations in Patiala, Sangrur, and Mansa have issued alerts. People are being advised not to go near these rivers. On Sunday, two floodgates of Sukhna Lake were opened, leading to an increase in water level in the Ghaggar River. As a result, water has started eroding embankments near Maru village. Fields in villages like Kami Khurd, Chamaru, Bolpur, and Oontsar have also been flooded.
