Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann held a meeting with farmer leaders today in Chandigarh. During the meeting, he presented a cheque of ₹1 crore to the family of Shubhkaran, a young farmer who lost his life during the farmer protests. Additionally, the Chief Minister handed over a government job appointment letter to Shubhkaran’s sister. Following this gesture, farmers have called off their planned protest in Bathinda on July 12.
On February 21, at the Punjab-Haryana Khanauri border, Shubhkaran and his companions were heading towards Delhi when Haryana police intercepted them. The police resorted to using tear gas and firing bullets. Despite the farmers halting their movement, the police continued their actions. According to one of Shubhkaran’s companions, he was just five steps away when a bullet hit Shubhkaran at the back of his head. Severely injured, Shubhkaran was rushed to the hospital, where doctors later declared him dead.
The Chief Minister’s meeting with the farmer leaders and the compensation provided to Shubhkaran’s family reflect the government’s commitment to addressing the concerns of farmers and supporting those who have suffered losses during the protests. The cancellation of the July 12 protest in Bathinda signifies a positive step towards resolving ongoing issues and maintaining peace in the region.
