In a significant development, former Supreme Court judge Ajay Manikrao Khanwilkar assumed the role of Chairperson of the Lokpal today. The oath-taking ceremony took place at the Rashtrapati Bhavan, where President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to Justice (retd) Khanwilkar.
With a distinguished career in the Supreme Court spanning from May 13, 2016, to July 29, 2022, Justice Khanwilkar brings a wealth of legal expertise to his new position. The official statement reveals that President Murmu presided over the ceremony, marking the formal appointment of Khanwilkar as the head of the Lokpal.
The appointment comes a month after Justice (retd) Khanwilkar was designated as the Chairperson of the Lokpal. The position had been vacant for the past two years following the retirement of Pinaki Chandra Ghosh on May 27, 2022.
