New Delhi: US President Donald Trump has called on the European Union to impose tariffs of up to 100 percent on India and China. According to a report by the Financial Times, Trump suggested this step as a way to put joint economic pressure on Russia to help end the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The report said Trump made this statement during discussions between US and EU officials on measures to increase the financial burden on Russia. By targeting major economies like India and China, the US hopes to push Russia into reconsidering its actions in Ukraine. A US official told the newspaper that America would be ready to “apply equally” any tariffs imposed by the European Union on India and China.
This news comes shortly after Trump and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke positively about strengthening India-US relations. Both leaders also discussed efforts to finalize a bilateral trade agreement.
The call for tariffs highlights the growing complexity of global trade and geopolitics. While India and the US continue to explore closer economic ties, Trump’s proposal could bring new challenges for India’s global trade relations if such tariffs are enforced by the EU.
