Immediate Suspension of Visas
The United States government has announced an immediate suspension on work visas for commercial truck drivers coming from abroad. This decision will affect drivers from several countries, including India, who were planning to work in the US transport sector.
Reason Behind the Decision
The move comes just days after a tragic incident where a Punjabi truck driver, violating traffic rules, drove his truck in the wrong direction. This caused a collision with a car, killing three people on the spot. Though the US government said the new policy is not aimed at any single country, the timing has linked it to this accident.
Statement from US Officials
US Secretary of State Mark Rubio said the step is meant to review the qualifications and safety standards of foreign truck drivers. On social media, he wrote, “The rising number of foreign truck drivers on American roads is creating risks for public safety and also affecting the livelihood of American truckers.”
Strict Monitoring of Current Visa Holders
The State Department clarified that all existing visa holders are under “continuous vetting.” If any driver is found violating safety rules, their visa can be revoked, and they may face deportation.
Shortage of Truck Drivers in the US
Interestingly, the US currently faces a shortage of more than 60,000 truck drivers. Despite this gap, the government is prioritizing road safety and English language ability for foreign drivers, believing these are key factors in preventing accidents.
Impact on Indian Drivers
Indian-origin truck drivers have been a strong part of the US logistics industry. However, the suspension means no new visas will be issued for now. Pending applications may face delays, rejections, or further reviews, leaving many applicants in uncertainty.
