New Sirhind Railway Station experienced a severe accident on Sunday morning when a stationary goods train was struck from behind by another goods train, leading to multiple injuries and significant disruption to rail services.
The collision occurred when a goods train carrying coal to the Ropar Thermal Plant was stationed at the platform. Another goods train, also carrying coal, collided with the stationary train, causing its engine to derail and flip onto another track. The derailed engine then struck the Calcutta-Jammu Tawi special summer passenger train (04681), leading to extensive damage to both the goods trains’ bogies and the passenger train’s engine.
Two loco pilots, identified as Vikas Kumar, 37, and Himanshu Kumar, 31, both residents of Saharanpur, were injured in the incident. They were immediately taken to the Civil Hospital in Fatehgarh Sahib and, after receiving first aid, were referred to Rajindra Hospital in Patiala for further treatment. Several passengers also sustained minor injuries and were given first aid at the scene.
The impact of the collision disrupted train services on the Ludhiana-Ambala route, affecting 29 trains. Railway authorities have been working to restore traffic, with senior officials on-site to supervise the restoration efforts. The derailed goods train blocked the tracks between Sadhugarh and Sirhind, necessitating the diversion of trains via Rajpura, Patiala, Dhuri, and Chandigarh.
