In a recent session of the Rajya Sabha, Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Sanjay Singh appealed to the Modi government to increase the prison budget from the current allocation of Rs 300 crore. Singh’s request was met with laughter from the members present. Despite the lighthearted reaction, Rajya Sabha Speaker Jagdeep Dhankhar described Singh’s appeal as ’emotional’ and urged the government to consider the demand seriously.
Singh emphasized the need for improved prison facilities and better living conditions for inmates, arguing that the current budget was insufficient to address the various challenges faced by the prison system. He highlighted issues such as overcrowding, inadequate healthcare, and poor sanitation as critical areas needing urgent attention.
Speaker Dhankhar acknowledged the gravity of Singh’s points and called for a thoughtful review of the budget allocation for prisons. He emphasized the importance of addressing the humanitarian aspects of prison management and ensuring that inmates are treated with dignity.
The incident underscores the ongoing debates around prison reform in India and the need for increased financial resources to improve the conditions within the country’s correctional facilities. Singh’s appeal, although met with laughter, has sparked a discussion on the necessity of enhancing the prison budget to ensure better facilities and rehabilitation programs for inmates.
