Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) President Advocate Harjinder Singh Dhami has written to Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, demanding a ban on Kangana Ranaut’s film Emergency, set to release on January 17. The SGPC has expressed strong objections, claiming the film defames the Sikh community and portrays historical events inaccurately.

In his letter, Dhami highlighted that the film includes depictions of the military attack on Sri Harmandir Sahib and Sri Akal Takht during Operation Blue Star, as well as the Sikh genocide, in a way that allegedly targets the community. He also accused the filmmakers of tarnishing the image of Sant Jarnail Singh Khalsa Bhindranwale.

The SGPC had earlier lodged an objection with the Punjab Chief Secretary on November 14, 2024, and passed a resolution to ban the film in the state. However, Dhami expressed disappointment with the AAP government’s lack of action, warning of strong protests if the film is released in Punjab.

The SGPC has also sent letters to the Punjab Chief Secretary, DGP, and district administrations, urging them to halt the release. SGPC Secretary Pratap Singh submitted a letter to the Deputy Commissioner of Amritsar, reiterating the committee’s demand.

Dhami warned that releasing the film could lead to widespread anger among Sikhs. He emphasized that the SGPC will strongly oppose the movie at the state level if the government fails to intervene.

Tickets for Emergency have already gone on sale in Punjab. With just a day left for its release, the situation remains tense as Sikh organizations prepare for possible protests.
