Former US Ambassador to the United Nations, Nikki Haley, has strongly criticized ex-President Donald Trump’s plan to raise tariffs on Indian goods. She warned that this move could seriously harm the growing partnership between the US and India. Haley pointed out that the Trump administration is being unfair by offering trade relief to China, America’s rival, while punishing India, a key democratic ally.

On social media platform X, Haley said, “India should not buy oil from Russia, but China, our enemy, is the biggest buyer and still gets 90-day tariff relief. Don’t reward China and hurt India.” She stressed that the US must support democratic allies like India to counter China’s rising influence.

Trump had earlier said in an interview that he would increase tariffs on Indian goods by 25% starting August 1, mainly because India continues to buy oil from Russia. He claimed India’s tariffs are the highest in the world and that the US gets little in return.

India has defended its oil purchase policy, stating it acts in its national interest and seeks affordable energy. The situation has also affected India’s economy, with ICRA cutting the GDP growth forecast to 6.0% due to rising trade tensions.
