The Central Government has approved a ₹30,000 crore LPG subsidy for public sector oil companies—Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Limited (HPCL). This decision was taken in a cabinet meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Additionally, the government has approved ₹12,000 crore for the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) for the financial year 2025-26. Under this, 10.33 crore beneficiary families will receive a subsidy of ₹300 per LPG cylinder for up to nine cylinders annually. PMUY was launched in May 2016 to provide free gas connections to women from poor households.

As of August 1, 2025, about 10.33 crore PMUY connections have been distributed. India imports around 60% of its cooking gas needs. The cabinet also approved the implementation of the Multidisciplinary Education and Research Improvement in Technical Education (MERIT) scheme in 275 technical institutions, including 175 engineering colleges and 100 polytechnics.
