Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla has accepted a proposal signed by 146 Members of Parliament seeking the removal of Allahabad High Court Judge Justice Yashwant Varma. The Speaker has formed a three-member committee to investigate the allegations, marking the start of the impeachment process. Birla said the charges are serious and warrant action for removal.
The inquiry panel includes Supreme Court Justice Aravind Kumar, Madras High Court Chief Justice Maninder Mohan Srivastava, and senior Karnataka High Court advocate B.V. Acharya. The committee will submit its report as soon as possible, and the impeachment motion will remain pending until then.
The proposal, supported by MPs from BJP, Congress, TDP, JDU, JD(S), Jana Sena Party, AGP, Shiv Sena (Shinde faction), and CPM, was submitted on July 21. Notable signatories include BJP leaders Anurag Singh Thakur, Ravi Shankar Prasad, and Rajiv Pratap Rudy, as well as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and NCP (SP) MP Supriya Sule.
The move follows the recovery of burnt currency notes from Justice Varma’s official residence on March 14, after which he was transferred from the Delhi High Court back to the Allahabad High Court. The panel will now examine the case and submit its findings before further action is taken.
