Prime Minister Narendra Modi is expected to address the annual high-level session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) in September, according to the provisional list of speakers released by the UN. The 80th UNGA session will begin on September 9, with the high-level general debate scheduled for September 23–29. As per tradition, Brazil will speak first, followed by the United States, where President Donald Trump will deliver his address on September 23 — his first UNGA speech since beginning his second term.
The provisional schedule lists India’s Head of Government to speak on the morning of September 26, alongside leaders from Israel, China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh.
Modi last visited the US in February for a bilateral meeting with Trump at the White House. Following the meeting, both leaders announced plans to begin the first round of negotiations for a mutually beneficial, multi-sectoral Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) by fall 2025.
However, trade relations have recently faced tension after Trump imposed a 50% tariff on India, including a 25% penalty for purchasing Russian oil, effective August 27. India’s Ministry of External Affairs called the move unfair and affirmed that the country would take all necessary measures to protect its national interests and economic security.
