Sterilized Dogs Can Return to Their Areas

The Supreme Court of India has modified its earlier directions on stray dogs. Now, sterilized and vaccinated dogs can be released back into the same areas from where they were picked up. The court made this change after concerns were raised about overcrowded shelters and the poor health of animals kept in cages for long periods.

Ban on Feeding Dogs on Streets

The court also ruled that people will not be allowed to feed stray dogs on public streets. Anyone found doing so can face legal action under existing laws. However, the court directed municipalities and local bodies to create dedicated feeding zones for stray dogs, based on the size of the local population and the number of dogs.

Issue Across the Country

The Supreme Court stressed that the problem of stray dogs is not limited to one city or state, but is spread across the country. Therefore, all states and union territories have been made parties to this matter.

Clear Guidelines on Release of Dogs

The bench clarified that dogs can only be released after proper vaccination and sterilization. However, this rule will not apply to dogs infected with rabies. The court suspended its earlier order that had prohibited releasing dogs outside shelters.

Humane Population Control Emphasized

The judges said both sides of the debate share the same goal: to prevent uncontrolled dog populations on streets and to reduce animal suffering. The court highlighted that strict implementation of Animal Birth Control (ABC) Rules is essential. Humane treatment, sterilization, and vaccination are key steps to control the stray dog population effectively while also ensuring public safety.
