Punjab has been battling severe floods for the past week, with eight districts badly affected. More than 1,300 villages have come under floodwaters, and 26 people have lost their lives so far. Continuous rainfall since yesterday has made the situation even more critical. Rising water levels have been reported in rivers Ravi, Beas, and Sutlej, along with the Ghaggar River. The increased water in Ghaggar has created flood fears in Mohali, Patiala, Sangrur, and Mansa districts.
The Meteorological Department has issued a red alert for September 1 in nine districts: Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Ropar, Mohali, and Fatehgarh Sahib. Forecasts also warn of heavy rain on September 2. Meanwhile, almost all major cities of Punjab have been receiving nonstop heavy rainfall since last night, turning urban areas into waterlogged zones.
In Ludhiana, rain started around 4 a.m. on September 1 and has continued throughout the day, creating major inconvenience for residents. Water has entered several houses, damaging household items and forcing families into difficult conditions. The Buddha Dariya is also flowing above normal levels, adding to the concern. Authorities are on alert, urging citizens to remain cautious and follow safety guidelines.
