Focus on Border Peace and Cooperation
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping met during the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) summit. Both leaders agreed to work towards a “fair, reasonable, and mutually acceptable” solution on border issues. They stressed that peace and harmony in border areas are important for the steady growth of India-China relations. Modi said that ties must be based on “mutual trust, respect, and sensitivity.”
Trade and Investment Commitments
The leaders highlighted the need to expand trade and investment between the two countries. They agreed to reduce the trade gap and explore new opportunities for cooperation. Modi and Xi also recognized the role of India and China in stabilizing global trade, especially at a time when higher tariffs and global uncertainties have created challenges.
Global and Regional Issues
Modi and Xi underlined the importance of working together on global platforms. They discussed challenges such as terrorism, fair trade, and global stability. Both agreed that India-China relations should not be influenced by the views of third countries but should focus on strategic independence and common goals.
Building People-to-People Ties
The leaders also emphasized strengthening cultural and people-to-people connections. They talked about resuming Kailash Mansarovar Yatra and making travel easier through direct flights and better visa facilities. These steps, they said, would bring the people of India and China closer.
Moving Forward
The meeting reflected a positive momentum in India-China ties since their last discussion in Kazan. Both sides expressed satisfaction over the return of troops from disputed areas in Eastern Ladakh and the restoration of peace along the border. Modi called the conversation “fruitful” and said cooperation between the two nations will benefit not only 2.8 billion people but also the entire humanity.
