Farmers and Labour groups under the Kisan Mazdoor Morcha have announced a statewide Rail Roko protest on December 5, from 1 PM to 3 PM, against the Central Government’s proposed Electricity Amendment Bill-2025. The Morcha will hold demonstrations at nearly two dozen railway locations across Punjab.
Morcha leader Sarwan Singh Pandher said the Central Government wants to bring this bill to end people’s electricity subsidy. He alleged that the bill has been prepared to benefit corporate houses, under which smart meters and prepaid meters will be installed in every home. Farmers have demanded that the draft of the bill be cancelled and where prepaid meters have already been installed, they should be removed and replaced with old meters.
The Morcha also criticised the state government for not giving proper compensation to flood-affected families.
Pandher said that protests will take place at major railway routes including Devidas Pura and Majitha (Amritsar), Batala, Gurdaspur, Dera Baba Nanak, Pathankot, Tarn Taran, Jalandhar Cantt, Hoshiarpur (Tanda), Patiala (Shambhu and Bara), Sunam, Fazilka, Moga, Rampura, and several other points. The Morcha said the agitation will continue until their demands are accepted.
