The University Grants Commission (UGC) has ordered an inquiry into the death of a 19-year-old student of Government Degree College, Dharamshala, Himachal Pradesh, following serious allegations of ragging and harassment. The decision was taken on Saturday after media reports highlighted the case.

UGC has constituted a Fact-Finding Committee to investigate the incident. According to a senior UGC official, the Anti-Ragging Helpline took suo motu notice of the matter based on media reports and registered a complaint. However, the college administration has stated that it was a death and not a suicide.
As per police, the student died on December 26 while undergoing treatment at a hospital in Ludhiana. A case was registered on January 1 based on a complaint filed by the student’s father. In his complaint, he alleged that on September 18, 2025, his daughter was physically assaulted by three senior students named Harshita, Akriti, and Komolika. He also accused a professor, Ashok Kumar, of inappropriate behavior.
The father claimed that due to continuous physical and mental harassment, his daughter’s health deteriorated, ultimately leading to her death. UGC has assured strict action against those found guilty, stating that student safety remains its top priority.
