The Punjab Roadways, PUNBUS, and PRTC Contract Workers’ Union has announced a state-wide strike on February 11, grounding approximately 7,200 government buses. This move comes as a direct challenge to the state government, with workers protesting against long-standing unfulfilled promises.
Key Reasons for the Strike
During a gate rally held at the Ludhiana depot, union leaders expressed deep frustration over the government’s “delaying tactics.” Their primary demands include:
Regularization of Services: Contractual workers who have been serving for years are demanding permanent job status.

Opposition to the ‘Kilometer Scheme’: The union strongly opposes the government’s plan to introduce private buses under the kilometer scheme, viewing it as a step toward privatization that favors corporate houses over public interest.
Escalation of Protest
The union has made it clear that this is an “all-or-nothing” battle. If the government fails to address their grievances following the strike on the 11th, the protesters plan to escalate their movement. On February 12, workers intend to march toward Sangrur to surround the residence of Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.
Impact on Commuters
The total “Chakka Jam” (complete halt of wheels) is expected to disrupt daily travel for thousands of passengers across Punjab. Union leaders stated they have issued this advance notice to help the public plan their travel accordingly and avoid inconvenience.
The workers maintain that they are forced into this position because the government has consistently ignored their pleas for job security and fair policies.
