Indian Railways has introduced major changes in ticket cancellation rules. Now, passengers will get a refund only if they cancel their ticket at least 8 hours before the train’s departure time. If a ticket is cancelled within 8 hours, no refund will be given.

Earlier, passengers could cancel tickets up to 4 hours before departure and still receive a 50% refund. However, this rule has now been removed. Under the new system, cancellations made between 24 hours and 8 hours before departure will get only a 50% refund.
Ashwini Vaishnaw stated that these changes aim to stop agents and middlemen from blocking tickets unfairly.
There is also some good news. Passengers can now change their boarding station up to 30 minutes before departure. These new rules will be implemented in phases between April 1 and April 15, 2026.
