In a major development, the leaders of Russia and Ukraine are set to hold direct talks on May 15 in Turkey, raising hopes of a possible ceasefire and an end to the war that has stretched on for over three years.
The proposal for the talks came from Russia, with a call for a direct meeting between both sides. Ukraine responded positively, with its leader confirming readiness to meet for peace discussions. This marks the first time since the early days of the war that such a direct meeting between the two presidents is set to take place.
The move follows increased international pressure for a peaceful resolution. Several European countries recently gathered in Kyiv and issued a strong message to Russia, demanding an unconditional 30-day ceasefire by Monday. They warned that failure to do so would result in fresh and massive sanctions. While Russia’s leadership responded with an invitation for talks, no clear mention was made about the ceasefire demand.
Until now, Ukraine’s allies had been firm in their position that no negotiations could begin unless Russia agreed to a full and unconditional halt to all military action.
