The selection committee, led by the Prime Minister, will meet on Monday to decide the next Chief Election Commissioner. The committee also includes the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha and the Union Home Minister. The meeting will take place at the Prime Minister’s official residence.
The current Chief Election Commissioner is set to retire on February 18. To fill the position, a search committee has shortlisted candidates, and the selection committee will choose one name from the list. Based on this recommendation, the President will appoint the new Chief Election Commissioner.
Among the senior officials in the Election Commission, one of the current Election Commissioners has a term lasting until January 2029. However, the final selection will depend on the committee’s decision.
