The Delhi High Court dismissed a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) on Thursday that sought the removal of Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal following his arrest by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in connection with a money laundering case linked to the excise policy. The PIL, filed by the president of an organization, argued for Kejriwal’s removal from office, citing the arrest in the Delhi Excise policy scam.
Acting Chief Justice Manmohan Singh and Justice Manmeet P.S. Arora asserted that national interest must sometimes supersede personal interests, but emphasized that such decisions lie beyond the purview of the court’s jurisdiction. The bench highlighted its recent dismissal of a similar PIL targeting Kejriwal’s removal, affirming its stance.
In response to the court’s decision, the petitioner’s counsel indicated plans to withdraw the petition and pursue alternative recourse, potentially involving the Lieutenant Governor. Consequently, the court disposed of the petition, granting the petitioner permission to withdraw it.
The legal saga surrounding Kejriwal’s alleged involvement in the money laundering case continues, prompting debates over governance, accountability, and the role of the judiciary in addressing such matters.
